Providence 15 (2T, 1C, 1P) vs New London County 14 (1T, 3P) Providence hosted New London County at a soccer field with proper lines, flags, and pads. The posts were on the deadball line and the try zones were unacceptably short (~5′), which created unnecessary confusion and should be noted for any league matches. Providence took full advantage of knowing their own field setup while NLC suffered several times from the misplaced deadball line and short try zones. The score indicates the closeness of this match, and at the end of the game it really could have gone either way. NLC had one drop goal go wide by a very small margin, and one ball taken dead out the back of the try zone instead of scored, and either of those would have turned the match. In the general run of play Providence controlled the breakdown and dominated in the scrums, and that gave them much more go forward ball than NLC had.
The first half saw the teams swap penalty kicks and Providence score a try. Possession was more evenly distributed in the first half, though Providence was better able to control the ball at the breakdown. NLC had some dynamic runners and had a better open field game, but Providence’s defense kept them out of the try zone. The half ended Prov 8, NLC 3. The second half saw NLC with more possession. They scored 9 of their points on penalties, which Prov gave away more when NLC was attacking. I had to issue a team warning for Prov for breakdown penalties, and they kept things clean after that. Prov scored pretty early in the second half and settled in to defend their lead. NLC put up 2 penalties and a great broken play try, and launched several attacks trying to get winning points on the board. I didn’t know until my watch beeped who was going to win. |
