Providence Rugby at NLC Rugby Match Report – 4/30/11

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

New London County (1st XV) vs. Providence (1st XV)
30 April 2011

Location: Clark Lane Middle School105 Clark Ln, Waterford, CT

SCORE:
New London County: 25
Providence: 36

Warm, overcast day in New London. Perfect weather for a game of rugby. Both teams were at the pitch early, a sign of their eagerness for the day to begin.
The first half was anybodies game, with consistend tackling, and hard hits coming from both sides. New London spent most of the half in the opposing teams 50. And the score showed that with them with a slight lead at halftime.

Providence came out in the second half determined ready to prove something, and did so by scoring within the first 45seconds right under the post. Within the next 20 minutes it was Providences game, scoring 3 times. New London had a slight resurgance in the last part of the half scoring to lift their own spirits. Unfortunetly, it was a little too late.

Despite a little bit of chippyness from both sides, a hard fought match.

NLC Rugby at Saratoga Stampede – 4/23/11

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Saratoga Stampede (1st XV) vs. New London County (1st XV)
23 April 2011

Location: Shenentaha Creek Park, Malta

SCORE:
Saratoga Stampede: 5
New London County: 17

Due to adverse weather conditions, the field was in a less than perfect state, and the prospect of open, running rugby seemed bleak. However, both sides should be commended for ignoring the conditions as best they could, and certainly not let the sodden, soaked field dampen their enthusiasm.
Both teams were clearly well structured and coached. They both tried to use the space, rather than just trudge up th middle of the park.

First blood went to New London, who after some work-horse like play final crossed the line in the left corner. And the conversion kick that followed was right out of the Johnny Wilkinson playbook; straight between the uprights from the touchline.

Saratoga showed fight and spirit, and showed they were certainly no push-overs. In fact, the scoreline slightly flatters New London, it what was a very close match. And despite conceding a second try, Saratoga did score themselves, to end the half 5-12.

The second half was much the same as the first, quick hands and quick rucking. The match was played in a hard fashion, which occasionally boiled over. However, the team captains did an outstanding job of keeping control of their players. The only black note was each team had a penalty decision reversed for retaliation.

There were no major discipline problems, and no major injuries reported to myself.

All in all, the game was hard fought and well played by both teams. One wonders what spectacle would have been played out had the field conditions not been so dire.

NLC Rugby at Newport Rugby Match Report – 4/16/11

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Newport (1st XV) vs. New London County (1st XV)
16 April 2011

Location: The Joseph ‘Jay’ Kirwin Rugby Pitch,Fort Adams State Park Newport, RI 02840

SCORE:
Newport: 20
New London County: 15

Cool, windy day, played on the scenic pitch of Ft. Adams State Park. Thankfully the clouds overhead did not unleash any rain.
The pitch was soft due to the rain from earlier in the week and footing was tough in a few scrums but overall both teams did well under the conditions, especially in light of frequent gusts of wind.

Newport chose the wind at their back in the first half and it paid dividends, running in two converted tries and slotting two penalties to one penalty for New London in reply.

The second half was more of a see-saw affair but New London made the most of their scoring chances, scoring two tries, converting one including one with the final play of the game to make the scoreline respectable.

Good game played well within the spirit of the laws.

2011 New London Irish and Mystic Irish Parades

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Come out and cheer on NLC Rugby as they take part in the New London Irish and Mystic Irish Parades.

The 4th Annual NL Irish Parade is on Thursday March 17th at 3PM and the parade route is from the Bank St. Connector continues up State Street to end at Hanfin’s Irish Pub.  Players and others marching in the parade are asked to meet on Bank St. at 2PM, prior to the start.

The 21st Mystic Irish Parade is on Sunday March 20th at 1PM and the parade route is here.   Players and others marching in the parade are asked to meet in the the South parking lot for Mystic Seaport (farthest from Olde Mystick Village) on Greenmanville Rd. at 11AM.  There will probably only be a few parking spots at this parking lot so everyone should park at the North lot of Mystic Seaport (closest to Olde Mystick Village) and walk down to the other lot.
