Match Report: NLC Rugby at Springfield Rifles – 4/13/13

April 28th, 2013

April 13th 2013

NLC vs. Springfield @ Springfield

Coming off of a win against ECSU, NLC Rugby put their sights on their divisional rival, Springfield.   The weather on this April afternoon was fantastic and perfect for a game of Rugby.

With a few roster changes prior to the match due to injuries and illness, NLC was in great form to put up some serious numbers on that Saturday.   From the first whistle you could see the dedication to fitness and skill were superior for NLC.  Springfield has had a reputation in the past as being a ‘rough neck’ rugby club that could become chippy at any moment.  On this particular Saturday this was not the case.  There were few if any incidents occurring that involved ‘dirty’ play.

Within the first 10 minutes of the match NLC was already up 1 try to nil with a score from fly half Louis Zubek (10).  Timmy Kolnaski’s (13) boot was phenomenal this particular afternoon with 7 conversions.   NLC’s Skipper John Mallazzi (7) placed one down shortly after which made the score 14-0.  With a brief moment of skill and idiocy, Loose Head Prop Nate Stewart (1)had a tremendous 80m “sprint” up the sideline with nothing but grass and 5 points in sight.  With lack of judgment and a hint of cockiness the prop attempted to center the try only to be held up by Springfield’s scrum half who never let up pace.  He did redeem himself with a pick and go try within minutes of his not forgotten blunder.  Tim Kolnaski (13) scored three tries. Sam Carter (3) scored in the second half and Elijah (15) scored two tries.  Springfield’s number 17 finally punched one into the try zone late in the second half.

It was a great day for rugby and both teams did let off the gas until the final minute regardless of the score.  Final at the end of the match was 69-7

New London County RFC at Framingham Exiles – 10/14/12

October 18th, 2012

Framingham Exiles (1st) vs. New London County (1st)
14 October 2012

SCORE
Framingham Exiles: 0    New London County: 36

A messy, wet and cold morning broke and a the sun came up on a perfect afternoon for rugby. The ground was wet and muddy, but that did not deter the teams from playing their hearts out.

New London was the stronger team and was able to break through tackles to score a number of their tries. Nevertheless, Framingham keep playing hard till the end and at times, had great stretches of play that made the game an exciting game to referee.

New London County RFC at Mad River Rugby – 10/6/12

October 7th, 2012

Mad River/Stowe (1st) vs. New London County (1st)
06 October 2012

SCORE
Mad River/Stowe: 5    New London County: 30

Full sized pitch; thickly grassed; 50 degrees with a steady rain that finally abated in the second half. The conditions were a recipe for poor ball handling and that was indeed the case but much more so for Mad River/Stowe. New London went out to an early lead 12 to 0 on two tries, one converted, attributable to its fitness and hard running. The match settled down a bit but just as the first half was about to end New London capitalized on a knock on by Mad River/Stowe 10 meters in front of its try line to score a converted try and take a 19 to 0 lead to the half. In the second half New London converted a penalty kick and then Mad River/Stowe finally got on the score board with an unconverted try. Just as it looked like Mad River/Stowe might get back into the match New London converted another penalty and then pounced on a Mad River/Stowe knock on in its in goal for an unconverted try.
