Providence 15 (2T, 1C, 1P) vs New London County 14 (1T, 3P) Providence hosted New London County at a soccer field with proper lines, flags, and pads. The posts were on the deadball line and the try zones were unacceptably short (~5′), which created unnecessary confusion and should be noted for any league matches. Providence took full advantage of knowing their own field setup while NLC suffered several times from the misplaced deadball line and short try zones. The score indicates the closeness of this match, and at the end of the game it really could have gone either way. NLC had one drop goal go wide by a very small margin, and one ball taken dead out the back of the try zone instead of scored, and either of those would have turned the match. In the general run of play Providence controlled the breakdown and dominated in the scrums, and that gave them much more go forward ball than NLC had.
The first half saw the teams swap penalty kicks and Providence score a try. Possession was more evenly distributed in the first half, though Providence was better able to control the ball at the breakdown. NLC had some dynamic runners and had a better open field game, but Providence’s defense kept them out of the try zone. The half ended Prov 8, NLC 3. The second half saw NLC with more possession. They scored 9 of their points on penalties, which Prov gave away more when NLC was attacking. I had to issue a team warning for Prov for breakdown penalties, and they kept things clean after that. Prov scored pretty early in the second half and settled in to defend their lead. NLC put up 2 penalties and a great broken play try, and launched several attacks trying to get winning points on the board. I didn’t know until my watch beeped who was going to win. |

North Jersey was a bit late but no worries and shy of a good portion of their starting 15. Similiar to New London’s travel down to NYC to play in the fall. However, players showed up and were ready go. The first half saw a tight match with play moving around. North Jersey wanted to keep in close and New London wanted to use its backs. Very contrasting styles. However, mounting injuries and fatigue caught up with North Jersey and in the second half New London created few overloads out wide and took control of the match.
Overall, well played. |

Spring 2010 NLC Match Update 1
April 18th, 2010It’s been a great start for NLC rugby this spring.
Here are the match reports from the first two matches:
| New London County (1st XV) vs. Newport (No Visitor Team provided) 10 April 2010 Location: Clark Lane Middle school: 105 Clark Lane, Waterford CT, 06385 |
| SCORE: New London County: 15 Newport: 21 |
| First match of the season for all invoved. Beautiful windy day fo rugby. Hard-fought match featuring a DII squad and a DIII squad which can compete at DII level. I must admit that the referee was quite rusty and lacked sufficient pace to the breakdown which understandingly frustrated the players. Each team traded penalty kicks early on, but New London scored the lone converted try of the first half and lead 10-6 after 40min. Newport dominated the second half, scoring 15 points to NLC’s 5. |

| SCORE: New London County: 22 Charles River: 8 |
| Play was dominated by the forwards, with tries coming on the occasions the ball was moved to the backs. Multiple mauls occurred, and the ball was moved for both sides by a heavy ground and pound game style. Kicking was apparent, but while intended strategically usually led to kicking matches with play resuming where the initial kick occurred.A good game, with both teams enjoying themselves and representing themselves and rugby well. |

NLCRFC v. North Jersey
December 27th, 2009North Jersey RFC 5 – New London County RFC 0
14 November 2009
By A John Aitken
In the slightly surreal setting of the municipal pitches at Randall’s Island, with the traffic thundering overhead across the Tribeca Bridge, NLC faced the New York Metro D3 champions, the undefeated North Jersey. Slate grey skies that matched their shirts and a stiff breeze greeted the men from South East Connecticut who arrived knowing that this match would either mark the end of their season or provide them with an opportunity to play for promotion.
With regular fly half Tim Johnson unavailable owing to an ill-timed work injury New London took the turf pitch with a modified line up, utilising the multi talented Parulis at 10 rather than his more customary No8. With the wind at their backs and facing a large and powerful pack New London, unsurprisingly, aimed to kick themselves into decent field position and then revert to their more familiar quick ball style of running rugby. To their credit North Jersey’s back three effectively contained this strategy, fielding the ball well and responding with big kicks of their own. The main attacking threat from NoJo came in the form of their human wrecking ball of an inside centre, a powerfully built lad with a low centre of gravity and a fair turn of speed over 15 yards. Strong tackling in the midfield from Zubek and Booth blunted much of this threat with the latter producing some particularly effective hits, taking the man low and hard, stopping him in his tracks. A succession of forward passes further undermined the home team’s efforts whilst NLC also struggled with handling, a number of good attacking positions going begging as the ball was knocked on in a normally sure handed back line. With both sides finding any real fluency elusive, it became increasingly obvious that this tightest of games would be a low scoring affair as defence, excellent on both sides, dominated proceedings. The forwards, meanwhile, continued to slug it out, as forwards are wont to. New London’s pack, despite being several pounds per man lighter and in most cases several inches shorter, gave a manful display and to the apparent surprise of their opponents, the scrum gave not an inch. With the lineout competitive but increasingly affected by the blustery wind both packs gave it everything they had. Something had to give and unfortunately the breach came in NLC’s wall of defiance in the twenty-eighth minute. North Jersey’s left winger touching down out wide after a series of drives following a successful lineout. The conversion sailed wide and with the gap at just 5 points at half time both sides still had everything to play for.
The second half saw the same total commitment from both teams as they battled for supremacy. With the expected rain driving into their faces the men in grey dug deep and brought forward drive after drive, undone by handling errors and determined North Jersey defence, time slipped away from them. Desperate to give Johnson another game the Connecticut side re-gathered themselves and drove once more but when a 5 metre penalty was repulsed one sensed that this was not to be New London’s day. The final whistle brought elation for the home side but bitter disappointment for the visitors. Whilst the pain was understandable NLC maintained their dignity and showed the sportsmanship which differentiates this game from other ‘sports’ as they applauded off the victors and joined them for a fraternal beer. New London will be back next year and, provided they maintain their playing base, will be challenging for promotion once again.
